Mihambo and Zverev at the top
Malaika Mihambo, a champion little known outside her country, won the title of best German athlete for the third year in a row. A feat rarely accomplished in the past.
After proclaiming herself the Olympic long jump champion in Tokyo, in her last attempt, she completed her record with this magnificent gold medal.
In this year’s 2021 standings, she is clearly ahead of Olympic wrestling champion Aline Rotter Focken, the first German crowned in the discipline. Third place for Ricarda Funk, gold medalist in kayak (slalom) at the Olympics.
Note the rare, near-absence of all winter athletes with the only Nathalie Geisenberger (sled) present in ninth place.
Without suspense also due to the attribution of the men’s trophy with the Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev who had a sensational year 2021.
The monstrous Florian Wellbrock, a tireless long-distance swimmer, also a Tokyo graduate, ranks second, ahead of jumper Karl Geiger, crowned world champion last February, at his home in Oberstdorf.
