For few clubs; the winter break will be as convenient as for Willem II. After a good start to the competition; Fred Grim’s team is completely lost. The Tricolores closed the year with a loss against NEC (0-1); the eighth league defeat in a row and the eleventh game in a series without wins.
The omens were not favorable for Willem II; because it did not win its previous thirteen Eredivisie matches with NEC and did not even score in the last five. Despite everything; Fred Grim’s team started the last game before the winter break full of bravado.
In the opening phase; in which the home team had a lot of ball possession; Willem II was denied a penalty. Verdonk knocks Saddiki to the ground in the penalty area; but referee Makkelie did not whistle and the VAR – Martin Pérez – did not hear anything. Moments later; the same happened when Elayis Tavzan planted his elbow in the face of Willem II defender Derrick Köhn: play on.
Willem II did not in the least look paralyzed after the long; bad series and NEC was in good hands. The home team didn’t get any great opportunities and the first of the visitors was immediately hit after more than half an hour of play. Magnus Mattsson was set free for Wellenreuther with a well-thought-through cross pass and finished in a controlled manner in the short corner: 0-1.
In the second half Dirk Proper had an excellent opportunity to double the visitors’ lead after Ulrik Jenssen lost the ball; but Wellenreuther prevented that with a good intervention.
With Görkem Saglam; Otschi Wriedt and Argyris Kampetsis (for Llonch; Kabangu and Saddiki); Grim brought fresh blood halfway through the second half in an attempt to force the equalizer. The pressure on the Nijmegen defense increased; but goalkeeper Mattijs Branderhorst was not often put to the test. That remained the case when the attackers Anthony Yeboah and Mats Köhlert were also brought in in the final phase (for defender Roemeratoe and midfielder Meerveld). It did not help.
Willem II did not finish a league match with eleven players for the sixth time this season. Ulrik Jenssen pulled the breaking Tavzan to the ground and was forced to the side with red.
Thanks to the good start to the competition; Willem II is not yet in the danger zone when the winter break starts; but it is clear that repair work will be needed in the coming weeks to stop the free fall.
