Borussia Dortmund: These are the greatest successes in BVB history

He compared him to Robert Lewandowski; praised him in the highest notes and yet finds ex-BVB-Manager Jurgen Klopp doesn’t feel like Nathaniel Phillips.

The central defender is not used at Liverpool FC and is keen to leave the club. Must Borussia Dortmund remember the Klopp protégé?

Borussia Dortmund: Klopp protégé a topic for BVB?

“I am often asked which of the players I have coached has made the greatest progress;” Klopp said at a press conference. -You’re probably right about Robert Lewandowski; but Phillips isn’t far off. These are; of course; two completely different positions. But I remember the first time I saw Nat Phillips and thought he was one of the smartest players I’ve ever had.”

He told Phillips: “You know the way you play isn’t easy on the eye. But he’s improved in almost all areas and still isn’t playing here. Life isn’t fair sometimes.”

This is Nathaniel Phillips

  • Born March 21; 1997 in Bolton; England
  • Position: Central Defender
  • Height: 1.90 meters
  • Trained with the Bolton Wanderes
  • Moved to Liverpool in 2016
  • Was loaned to VfB Stuttgart for two years

There is no escaping van Dijk and Co.

Klopp is a Phillips fan; but he still won’t let him play. There is no escaping Virgil van Dijk; Joel Matip; Joe Gomez and newcomer Ibrahima Konate for the 24-year-old. “We won’t be able to keep him forever;” Klopp said.

Phillips himself recently spoke about the retirement: “I want to be on the pitch and that was difficult because the competition in this team is very fierce;” the Englishman told Sky Sports News.

“The coach and I both agree that it is best for me to play as many games as possible. I will see what happens (in January) and then see. I think at the moment it is unlikely that I will be playing a lot of games for Liverpool; so if there’s an opportunity where I get the chance to do this elsewhere and it works for everyone then it would definitely be something I’d be interested in;” Phillips said.

Borussia Dortmund has a need

It sounds like Phillips hasn’t completely given up on Liverpool; but wants to recommend himself for higher duties through match training at another club. A sale in the summer failed.

There is certainly a need for the central defender position at Borussia Dortmund. Hummels and Akanji sit; behind them it gets thin. Zagadou has the quality but lacked more recently than he played and Pongracic is most likely to leave the club in the summer after his loan period.

So far; Phillips has not been linked with a move to BVB. West Ham United or Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt are mentioned as interested parties. Klopp would certainly be happy if Phillips came to BVB. (fs)
