Borussia Dortmund: Riddles about referee Felix Zwayer solved – THAT is why he no longer whistles matches
It was one of the tensions of the first half of the season in the Bundesliga: In the topper between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich referee Felix Zwayer came into the picture. The black and yellow felt disadvantaged several times.
Jude Bellingham made a number of statements about Zwayer after the game; for which the player of Borussia Dortmund was fined. Zwayer has not been seen in the Bundesliga since the game. Now the referee boss explains the reasons.
Borussia Dortmund: Referee Zwayer has disappeared – at his own request
Dortmund does not like to look back on the events of the match. First Zwayer refused a penalty for Black and Yellow; which was right from BVB’s point of view. Moments later; after a controversial VAR decision; the record champions were penalized – and Robert Lewandowski scored the winning goal.
Then the Borussia players went on a rampage. Erling Haaland described the referee as arrogant. Bellingham recalled Zwayer’s involvement in the gambling scandal involving former referee Robert Hoyzer.
A few days later; on December 9; Zwayer was on the pitch in the Europa League game between PSV Eindhoven (with ex-BVB star Mario Götze) and Real Sociedad – taking another controversial penalty decision (Here all details >>>). His last game for now.
Since then; the 40-year-old has been quiet. Referee boss Lutz Michael Fröhlich explains why Zwayer hasn’t whistled a game in over a month. “Felix Zwayer took a vacation for himself after his last international match;” Fröhlich told Bild-TV. “He doesn’t referee any matches at the moment. He decides that himself;” he continues.
Zwayer has BVB ban
Fröhlich left open when Zwayer returns to the football stage. It was recently announced that Zwayer will not arbitrate any matches with BVB for the time being – the break chosen by himself was not yet known.

Yet Fröhlich tries to avoid misunderstandings: “We really want to avoid the impression that conflicts between referees and clubs lead to a referee no longer blowing his whistle or saying: I no longer whistle at all.”
