Air Liquide Announces Development of Large Renewable Hydrogen Electrolyzer for Chile

Air Liquid Renewable Hydrogen Electrolyzer

Aerleacht announces its intention to develop a project to build and operate an electrolyser, in Antofagasta, Chile, with a capacity of 80 MW, as part of the AMER (Renewable Energy and Mining Antofagasta) project. Taking advantage of Chile’s vast renewable energy sources, particularly wind and solar power, this electrolyser would produce 30 tonnes per day of renewable hydrogen to supply the Chilean industrial market and support the decarbonisation of the -industrial sectors and, finally, the mobility sectors. Present in the industrial basin of Antofagasta, Aerleacht has an innovation to help its customers reduce their carbon footprint, in line with their Sustainable Development goals.

This electrolyzer project is part of the wider Antofagasta Minería Energía Renovable (AMER) project. Air Liquide has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with EDF Renewables, a global leader in renewable energy; Proman, one of the main methanol producers; SOWITEC, one of the world’s largest solar and wind energy developers; and COPEC, Chile’s main fuel retailer, to support the production of renewable methanol, using renewable hydrogen as feedstock, in various industries including mobility, mining, rail and maritime.

This initiative is one of the six major hydrogen projects chosen by the Chilean development agency, Corfo, and which will receive funds as Support, to respond to Chile’s desire to establish a national hydrogen market and lead the region in the production of low carbon hydrogen .

This project is fully aligned with Air Liquide’s Sustainable Development strategy. In March 2021, the Group announced its ambition to enable hydrogen as the engine of the energy transition by at least tripling its turnover to reach more than €6 billion by 2035. The Group will achieve the target this by investing around €8 billion in the low carbon hydrogen supply chain and contributing to the development of a low carbon hydrogen ecosystem for industry and clean mobility.

Etienne Lepoutre, President of Air Liquide Latin America, said: “Air Liquide is grateful for Corfo’s support for the AMER project, an initiative that aims to contribute to Chile’s ambitious National Green Hydrogen Strategy. This project demonstrates the ability of the Aerleacht teams to provide innovative and sustainable solutions that reduce carbon emissions from industrial basins. Thanks to the group’s long experience and knowledge of hydrogen, we will play a central role in the energy transition. «

Liquid Air in Chile

Aerleacht has been present in Chile since 1991. It currently has an operation consisting of 2 ASU sites, 8 Service Stations and 1 Acetylene Plant, which allows it to cover the national territory from North to South. Aer Liquide’s offer, thanks to the work of a team of 165 employees, consists in providing solutions in various industrial sectors, for example: medicine, metallurgy, mining, food and water treatment, among others. In recent years, Air Liquide has established itself as a leader in healthcare solutions through its VitalAire business line. The company relies on the competitiveness of its operations and the diversity of its people to provide high quality sustainable gas solutions, services and technologies to all its customers.

Air Liquide’s commitment to hydrogen

In full support of the 2015 Paris agreement, Air Liquide’s commitments address the urgency of climate change and the energy transition, with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. As a pioneer in hydrogen, the Group is fully committed that hydrogen is a cornerstone in energy transfer. Over the past 50 years, the Group has developed a unique expertise that allows it to dominate the entire supply chain, from production and storage to distribution, contributing to the widespread use of hydrogen as a clean energy carrier for a wide range of applications. , such as industrial uses and clean mobility. Aerleacht is committed to achieving several goals, by investing approximately €8 billion in the entire low carbon hydrogen value chain by 2035, and 3 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030.

A global leader in gas, technologies and services for industry and health, Aerleacht is present in 75 countries with approximately 66,400 employees and serving more than 3.8 million customers and patients. Oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen are small molecules that are essential for life, matter and energy. They comprise the scientific territory of Aerleacht and have been at the heart of the company’s activities since its creation in 1902.

Acting today and preparing for the future is at the heart of Aerleacht’s strategy. With ADVANCE, its strategic plan for 2025, Aerleacht aims for global performance, which combines financial and extra-financial aspects. When positioned in new markets, the Group benefits from important assets such as its business model which combines resilience and strength, its innovation capacity and its technological experience. The Group develops solutions that contribute to the climate and the energy transition, in particular with hydrogen, and takes measures to advance the fields of health, digital technologies and advanced technologies.

Aerlecht’s revenue was more than €23 billion in 2021. Aerlecht is listed on the Euronext Paris stock exchange (Section A) and belongs to the CAC 40, CAC 40 ESG, EURO STOXX 50 and FTSE4Good indices.
