Earlier this week, Christian Horner explained why the top teams had rejected too many sprints in Formula 1 this year. The CEO of Red Bull returned to the issue of inflation, which he says has caused the budget ceiling set in Formula 1 from last year to become obsolete.
“What you have to remember is that when the budget ceiling was lowered in the middle of the pandemic in 2020, no one could foresee the conditions we live in in the world today.” Horner explains, referring to the war in Ukraine.
“What we are seeing happening around the world will only increase the price up. Inflation looks like it could be at its peak. We are already seeing this impact on things like air freight just for this event.”
“I think this is a very important issue that we need to look at and address because it has a direct impact on people’s jobs and performance.”
Horner challenges the FIA and Formula 1 to revisit the budget ceiling. The latter has been reduced by five million dollars this year and will have to undergo the same reduction next year.
“It is the duty of regulators to look at this issue of some urgent need to ensure that relief is put in place to reflect what is happening in the world through rising cost of living. see.”
Horner is not the only one to complain because McLaren boss Andreas Seidl agrees: “It is always important to use common sense, especially with these additional challenges that have arisen in recent weeks and months in terms of inflation.”
“I think it’s important to just discuss it. We are completely ready for it and also open to possible solutions or corrections, as long as everything is within common sense.”
