Brussels, 4 March (Reuters) – Eurozone retail sales rise lower than expected in January, held back by lower and sluggish online fuel sales and food spending amid higher inflation to 5% , shows data released Friday by Eurostat.

Retail sales in the 19 countries that share the euro increased 0.2% month-on-month in January and 7.8% year-on-year.

Economists voted by Reuters had forecast increases of 1.3% and 9.1% respectively.

Sales of food products remained stable compared to December and sales of motor fuels fell by 1.3%.

Compared to January 2021, gasoline sales are up 12.7%, while online shopping is down 6.7% and food, beverage and tobacco sales are down 1.7%. (Jan Strupczewski report; Dina Kartit’s French version, edited by Blandine Hénault)
