What the Werkself is still missing in the top team

Bayer goals for the second half of the season
:
What Seoane wants to see from the Werkself

Bayer 04 Leverkusen is fourth after 17 days of play. But no one under the Bayer Cross is completely satisfied with that. Against Union Berlin; it’s about shaking off the disappointing end of the first half of the season at the beginning of the new year.

The new year is still young; but the declarations of war from the Werkself camp are already piling up. Busy after the first half of the season Leverkusen a Champions League place; but no one is really satisfied under the Bayer cross. Midfielder Robert Andrich stressed during the week that the squad should play much more aggressively and gallantly in the future. Sports director Simon Rolfes criticized the missed opportunity to break out of the competition before Christmas; and coach Gerardo Seoane testified to the team’s progress; but also found critical notes.

The main reason for the cloudy overall picture is the last week before the winter break. “That was definitely not satisfying for us;” said Seoane. This applies to the results as well as the performances at 2:5 in Frankfurt; 2:2 against Hoffenheim and 1:2 in Freiburg. “But I believe that at the end of the season everyone will get the place they deserve;” emphasized the Werkself coach. On Saturday (3:30 p.m.) against Union Berlin; it’s not just about brightening up the atmosphere at the start of the new year. With a win; Bayer could keep the capitals just one point away.

To keep Leverkusen in a Champions League place at the end of the season; a lot needs to be done. The defensive behavior with crosses is an example of this; but also defending in a group or concentrating for 90 minutes. In the future; however; Seoane wants to see a quality that is difficult to train in his players.

“The team has grown together and has a very good spirit; but there is certainly still a lot of potential to implement it even better on the pitch – especially in difficult situations;” he said. The Werkself are capable of playing good; even inspiring football; “but we are still on track to find the right mix to achieve positive results through other attributes on days when the playfulness doesn’t work out.” That makes real top teams. “We still have to take this step.”

After all; after the bad news that Charles Aránguiz will be out for about four weeks with muscle problems in his calf; there is good news for the staff too. Amine Adli went back to training on Monday; Timothy Fosu-Mensah on Tuesday and Piero Hincapie was back on the grass on Wednesday BayArena. The defender came from his home country the night before Ecuador ins Rhineland back; where he had to be quarantined over Christmas because of a positive Covid-19 test. Under the guidance of athletic trainer Daniel Jouvin; Hincapie completed an individual unit together with Adli and Fosu-Mensah. The rest of the team had Wednesday off after two intensive training days.

Hincapie is likely already an option against Union due to his return later this week. “He can be there on Saturday;” said Seoane. “But it’s how he feels that matters. The trend is towards a management position – unless someone else gets hurt. Then he has to play.” All in all; the coach sees good basic conditions for a successful second half of the season. “I feel with the players that they strive to get better; make progress and perform better as a team.” the pros “already pissed”; but now no one thinks about it anymore. “The players are looking ahead – and that’s what we want.”
